Wake your hair’s inner sexy, with Knaps Unisex Salon
A bucket of ice cold water is what these tired tresses needed to wake from its dull and fatigued state. I needed therapy so; I decided to make an appointment with Knaps Unisex Salon, located at 854 Nostrand Avenue (Btw Union & President St.) Brooklyn, New York.
I have to admit I wasn’t certain how I wanted my hair. Cut or trimmed? , flat ironed straight or curly? I can tell you that I was pretty amped about the experience I have been anticipating for the past couple of days. When I entered the shop I was greeted promptly and when I notified one of the workers of my appointment, within moments I was on my way to the chair for consultation .The consultation consisted of the level of maintenance needed for my hair, the issues that would need to be fixed and, style preference. I explained to the stylist my hair issues, to short on top, dryness, breakage, and frizz. As the consultation proceeded I explained that if it were cut then I would want it to resemble a bob, she then explained a considerable amount may have to be taken off. I did not want to sacrifice the length of my hair. I then opted to just get it trimmed and get a “Miss Jessie’s wet twist out” that they proudly service there.
Step 1:
My stylist carefully chose the cleansing and, conditioning products based on my hair type and need for both moisture and strength. (I was also asked my preference of water temperature. that was a plus in my book.) Hair was treated gently and massaged to stimulate scalp.
Step 2:
Moroccan oil was used as a leave-in to combat dryness and seal in moisture.
Step 3:
After proper preparation, hair was sectioned off into two strand twist with Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding. (I have to say that the smell is absolutely amazing. I’ve actually used it at home before. The product delivers and is worth investing in.)
While the Knaps stylist continued with styling my hair we conversed about what Sulfate free hair products the salon uses and how they benefit the hair, especially natural tresses due to the fact that naturals commonly suffer from dryness because of the unique hair structure, sebum the oily secretion of the sebaceous glands that acts as a lubricant for the hair can’t travel down the entire strand of hair. There for we require more moisture and TLC. Sulfates in hair products strip the hair of needed moisture and in long-term use can ultimately damage hair. Unfortunately most clients don’t know to ask for sulfate free products. Part of this problem result from not being properly educated from your hair professional. Thankfully Knaps Unisex offer different options of different product lines for each and every hair need, which they proudly sell and beautifully display in the front of their business.
After the enlighten conversation I was put under the dryer for about 45 minutes for the style to set. I comfortably waited while the time passed with a magazine and a few text messages here and there. My twist still smelling yummy from the Curly Pudding was taken down and teased and stretched to just the way I like it. End result? Hair that I love.
